"Jungle Walkway"
A poem by Hiram Johnson
If you must
know...
This road of boards,
so perfect, so smoothly hewn
Is a road to the
fantastic...
Not to some wet, horned
sycamore,
Nor to some city
of infantile mind or age...
Rather, it leads to things much more
beautiful than that...
For example, it leads (through a
rotting, ancient lighthouse in an open, empty plain),
To exotic isles--one hour to each--
where time rules all, in hand with life itself.
Or to lands where some can control the sands of deserts,
Or struggle to master the monster within.
Stray from the path,
and you can end up anywhere...
The deep, dark green of a jungle primordial holds
many secrets, many worlds...
Your heart alone chooses the
destination...
Dare you seek it
out?
